Great piece about a great filmmaker. It’s maddening how the media was fine with Lee as long as he kept his message inside the frame. Whenever it extended out into the real world, involved the way they interacted with him, and required them to think about things they weren’t comfortable thinking about, they were ready to trash him. Tarantino on the other hand, for all of his film craft, can be a provocative jerk, but because he has nothing really meaningful to say and doesn’t really challenge anybody to think, the media can stay in love with him.
(By the way, I always thought it was “Mister Señor Love Daddy”, not “Senior”.)
