The really bad news is that we construct our experience of the present in pretty much the same way. Sure we have more “reference material” coming through the senses, but our minds construct a “prediction” of our present experience and only update it with sensory information if the difference is enough to catch our attention, which is a surprisingly small percentage of the time.
